Boy, 13, lands major movie role after being mercilessly bullied

Quaden Bayles first captured global attention in 2020 after heart-wrenching footage of him sobbing and pleading for “rope” to end his life due to relentless bullying at school because of his dwarfism went viral.

Now, he has remarkably transformed his life by becoming an actor in the movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Quaden’s mother, Yarraka Bayles, took to her Facebook page to share a photograph of the 13-year-old posing with actress Anya Taylor-Joy on the set of George Miller’s latest film. The image, which quickly garnered attention, shows Quaden in a post-apocalyptic costume, his face painted pale, grinning beside a battle-worn Anya, who appeared to be holding him.

“Anya Taylor-Joy and Quaden Bayles on the set of FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA,” Yarraka captioned the picture, highlighting her son’s remarkable journey from a bullied schoolboy to a budding movie star. The Indigenous boy from Queensland, Australia, has turned his life around, now thriving as both an actor and influencer, just a few years after his despair made international headlines.

In 2020, Quaden’s story drew widespread sympathy when Yarraka posted a gut-wrenching video of him in tears, expressing his desire to end his life due to severe bullying. The boy had been subjected to extreme torment at his school because of his dwarfism, a genetic condition that significantly stunts growth.

According to the Mayo Clinic, dwarfism is generally defined as an adult height of 4 feet 10 inches (147 centimeters) or less, with the average adult height among people with dwarfism being around 4 feet (122 cm).

Quaden’s debut in the film industry was marked by his appearance at the Sydney premiere of George Miller’s 3000 Years of Longing in August 2022. On the red carpet, he shared his excitement about acting in his first movie. “I had lots of fun getting dressed in all different types of costumes,” Quaden said. “I pulled out a sword, and my outfit changed and confetti blew up… It was really great.”

The opportunity for Quaden to step into the limelight came after George Miller, the acclaimed Australian filmmaker, reached out to him and his mother following the viral video.

Miller recounted to NITV: “Like everyone else, I saw the footage that his mother Yarraka put up.” He was deeply moved by Quaden’s emotional plea and decided to offer him a role in his movie. “I was incredibly moved by it, and I thought, ‘If one good thing can happen out of bullying’… and we offered him a little part in the movie. He’s wonderful to work with.”

Quaden’s transformation from a bullied child to a film actor is a testament to resilience and the power of support and opportunity. His story, once a symbol of the devastating impact of bullying, now serves as an inspiring example of overcoming adversity and finding new paths to happiness and success.
