Man Nurses His Beloved Grandmother, Is Confused When He Inherits Only an Old Armchair after She Dies — Story of the Day

A man took care of his beloved grandmother until her death, only to receive an old armchair from her when she died. His mother mocked him because of it, but the man couldn’t care less as he genuinely loved his grandmother.

Levi loved his grandmother very much, as she was the person who raised him. While Levi’s mother, Annie, was busy looking for a new husband, Grandma Letty stepped in to raise her grandson with no complaints.

Growing up, Levi had difficulty making friends because he considered himself an “old soul.” He did not enjoy the usual things that kids his age liked and instead enjoyed reading books, collecting artifacts, and doing things that he could do with his grandmother.

Levi spent all of his free time with Grandma Letty. She taught him how to cook and would tell him inspiring stories that taught him to be kind and helpful to everyone. Even when he was in college, he made sure to study at a nearby university so he could constantly check up on her.

One day, when Levi was in his early 20s, his mom Annie came home for a couple of days before leaving for yet another trip to Europe. She revealed that Grandma Letty was terminally ill, and Levi needed to care for her.

Levi was heartbroken by his grandmother’s diagnosis. He did not want to lose her and could not imagine living the rest of his life without her. He made sure to care for her and make her feel comfortable throughout her last few months.

During her last moments, only Levi was there to keep her company. He held her hand the entire time and whispered how much she meant to him. “I love you so much, grandma. Thank you for raising me to be who I am today. Rest easy; you’ve lived an amazing life,” he told her.

A couple of moments after, Grandma Letty took her last breath. When she passed away, Levi called his mother. “Why couldn’t you come? I already told you that Grandma only had a couple of days left to live,” he asked her.

Annie scoffed. “I don’t need to say goodbye to her. She already knew what was coming anyway. It’d be a waste of money to fly back there to say goodbye.”

Levi was disappointed in his mother, so he didn’t push the issue. However, it baffled him that when Grandma Letty’s lawyer called for her will reading, it took only a day for Annie to plan her trip back to the US and make it in time to receive Grandma Letty’s inheritance.

Annie was excited because she knew her mother had a family heirloom that she could sell for significant money. As she and Levi sat at the lawyer’s office, ready to hear the will, the lawyer said:

“Letty Bellfield leaves her house at 154 Cambridge Street to her daughter, Annie, and she would like to leave her red leather armchair to her beloved grandson, Levi. Nothing follows.”

Annie was so delighted that her mother left the house to her that she completely forgot about the heirloom she wanted to inherit. Meanwhile, Levi was confused about why his grandmother left him her armchair.

When they walked out of the office, Annie shook her head as she laughed. “Oh, Levi. You are such a fool. You took such good care of your grandmother, and she left you with nothing but an old armchair. Take it out of the house by this week, or I’m taking it to the dumpster.”

Levi sighed. He could see his mother’s true colors, and he realized her selfishness was why he could never connect with her in the first place.

He took his armchair back to his apartment, thinking it was a good memory of his grandmother. After all, the armchair was where his grandmother would sit every time she’d read him stories, and it was something he liked to remember.

That same day, he decided to clean the chair, wiping dust off the cushions, then lifting them to wipe the dust under the seat. As he did, he realized that there was a deep compartment under the seat. It contained a small chest, which he decided to open.

When he did, he was surprised to see Grandma Letty’s family heirloom inside, a gorgeous diamond ring that had been passed on from generation to generation. It also contained a letter from Grandma Letty, which said:

“To my dearest grandson Levi, I hope you were not disappointed at the lawyer’s office when he read you my will. I didn’t want your mom to receive the heirloom because I was sure she would sell it. This diamond ring means a lot to me, as it belonged to my great-grandmother. May you keep it and pass it on to your daughter, and may she pass it on to the next generations to come. But if the time comes you would need money, I permit you to sell the ring so that you and your family may live comfortable lives.

I love you, my dear grandson, and I will miss you dearly. Love, Grandma Letty.”

Levi couldn’t help but cry. His grandmother found a way to look after him even after her death, which meant the world to him.

Meanwhile, Annie looked all over the house for valuable things to sell. She sold most of her mother’s belongings, but she could not find the diamond ring she was looking for. This is how Grandma Letty decided to teach her spoiled, irresponsible daughter a lesson.

What can we learn from this story?

We should not depend on our parents or grandparents for their inheritance. Levi did not expect anything from his grandmother’s will, while his mother, Annie, was excited to receive an inheritance because she knew she’d get money out of it. We should work hard and not depend on our parents and grandparents to provide us with a fortune when they pass away.
The love and care we receive while growing up shape us into who we become. Grandma Letty raised Levi to become a kind, compassionate gentleman.
